Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

Is there is something about your smile or just a few of your teeth that you simply do not like? You may have felt like your only option is to get rid of those teeth and just start again. However, before you go through all the work of getting those teeth removed, you may want to consider an easier option. Porcelain veneers are a great piece of dental work that can help to give your smile that perfect appearance, but it can also be beneficial in helping to maintain your natural teeth too.

However, if you are not sure if they are right for you just yet, then consider a number of the benefits that porcelain veneers can offer you!

  • A natural tooth appearance – Porcelain has long been a preferred choice for dentists to use for their dental work. The surface of porcelain mimics your natural teeth. The color can also be altered so that it matches your existing teeth. This means that the only person who knows you have had dental work completed is you!

  • The health of your gums – Your gums can be easily irritated, and irritated gums can quickly become infected. Porcelain is a great option because it does not inflame or irritate your gums, so you can enjoy perfect teeth and healthy gums.

  • Stain-resistant – Porcelain does not soak up some material in the same way that your teeth have. This means that you don’t have to make drastic changes to your diet to avoid staining your new veneers. You can continue to drink coffee in the morning, eat dark foods (chocolate and blueberries anyone?) throughout the day, and you can still enjoy your wine in the evenings.

  • Porcelain veneers are strong – Many dental offices will only offer resin veneers for their patients. This is understandable because the resin veneers can be easier for your dental team to install, but resins are not as durable as veneers and require touch-up or replacement more frequently than porcelain veneers.

When to Consider Veneers

Veneers can be a great option to help hide stained or damaged teeth, but there are a variety of situations where a porcelain veneer goes well beyond this.

  • Tooth Length – Veneers can be used to help increase your tooth length. Dentists often look at the smile line, an imaginary line that is drawn around the ends of your teeth. Smiles that appear perfect and are aesthetically pleasing typically have a smile line that is smooth and even between teeth. Veneers can help to improve your smile line immediately.

  • Cracked teeth – Cracked teeth can frequently happen for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, a cracked tooth leaves the internal structure of that tooth at increased risk for infection and disease. Porcelain veneers that are properly adhered to the tooth can seal the surface of the tooth to eliminate potential bacteria from ever taking hold.

  • Gapped teeth – Gaps between our teeth can easily be covered with a porcelain veneer. This can help to give the appearance of a complete smile without any unsightly gaps.

The Process

Once you have decided that veneers are right for you, we can perform the entire process in just two visits. During the first visit, a small amount of enamel will be removed from the front of the tooth. Next, a cast will be taken and sent to the lab to create the perfect veneer for you. While you wait, you will be fitted with a temporary veneer to protect the tooth and give you an idea of what your veneers will look like.

Once your veneers have come back from the lab, we will simply make sure that they fit, and then use specialized adhesives to attach them to the tooth. These adhesives also allow our talented staff to make sure that the veneers match your natural teeth.
